Heal+10 @ Mother Earth

You always hear about these new green building proposals and never hear about any getting built. S’ok I guess, we all have to start somewhere. But let’s hope they’re not dreams deferred. This one in particular sounds very exciting! You’re looking at the Ciliwung Recovery Program proposed for the fair city of Jakarta, Indonesia. Aiming “to collect the garbage of the riverbank and purify its water through an ingenious system of mega-filters that operate in three different phases.” If this project moves underway, it could create jobs for many people living in the slums around this river, clean up the pollution plaguing the city and river systems, and provide a cleaner, safer way of life for all along the river banks. Especially the fish and wildlife! Taking on both the freshwater and poverty crisis! Sounds like a “WIN WIN”. I also can’t help but wonder who the real winners and losers are when it comes to constructing, implementing, and maintaining these seemingly wonderful structures. *ponder*

Solar Baloon

I think I would love my city a little more if we had these things in our parks. From Designer Seongyong Lee,  (already sounds like a movie pitch) comes the Solar Baloon! Designed to harvest energy on a massive scale. “The collected energy is stored in a charger located in the base of the balloon. Energy collected in this model only lights the LEDs, however if it were produced to actual scale, the excess energy stored could provide enough power for many purposes including the operation of street lights.” I’m not sure how efficient these things would really be…but it’s a step in the right direction. Plus, I can’t stop looking at it!

Infinite USB

I can already hear the millions of people across the globe saying “I came up with that!”/”they stole my idea!” Yes…it is painfully simple but pretty neat. Not to mention probably not as cool when you actually use it. But either way I like the color coding. Makes your allegedly complex life a little simpler. *shrug*

Oh equalateral triangle, we meet again!

Does anyone else notice the blatant alchemy movement happening? I suppose you would have to know something about alchemy to know it’s happening to begin with. Either way, the geometry is hot these days and Andres Valerio is rockin’ it old school in a nice way I find acceptable. It reminds me of reading Childcraft Encyclopedias from the 60’s and 70’s in my Grandpa’s living room all summer when I was a kid. Good stuff. Although I’d rather see alchemy explained, applied, and used for the good of the people rather than more hipster art. But whatever. You love it, so “keep doin’ it wrong” and “keep singin’ along.”

Well damn.

lolion

No justice like natural justice I suppose. A poacher was ambushed by angry hippos and  devoured by lions in South Africa. I’ll let that speak for itself. Find out more by clicking below.

NoMix Toilets

nomix toilet

It looks as if Europe has found a simple solution to a very stinky problem that plagues us all! HUMAN waste management. These new toilets separate human urine and fecal matter to drain into different places. Why object to the mix up? “Municipal wastewater plants would have a significantly easier task (and produce more methane to generate electricity), and we could much more easily extract precious nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen for use as fertilizer (instead of using fossil fuels).” Sounds like good news for everyone! Hope to start seeing these porcelain thrones stateside!

Jurate’s Tears

I’m quite fond of natural things, history, and microcosms. So how exactly can someone get all of those very large ideas, compress them into something very small and unassuming? LIKE THIS!

klido

“Zilvinas Stankevicius’ kaleidoscope, made from responsibly sourced, fast-growing hazel branches and natural Baltic amber (not the unfriendly plastic or cheap metals that are use to make standard versions)” is an instant keeper. Inspired by the legend of Jūratė and Kastytis, the vision it grants is seemingly as beautiful as the true love shared between them. I know it was made for children, but it calls to me like a relic from a dream. It also happens to be reasonably priced.

I’ve always been a fan of figures, symbols, and patterns. Especially, if designers know how to keep it simple! Raid71’s work is elegant, simple, and fragmented. Take a gander his Flickr photostream!

Golden Flower Soup

Golden Flower Soup

…or more commonly known as Egg Flower Soup, is probably one of the best things you can have for breakfast. I always feel as if I can take over the world when I have a bowl! Try it out at a local East Asian restaurant, or make it yourself with this recipe!
